The composition is based on the painting I 4 Carabinieri ( The 4 constables ) that he painted in October 1913, with the “5 hunchbacks” (“gobbi”). Cangiullo made the following comment about this piece: “This is the very first idea of ‘humanised letters’, which came to me one afternoon in the cabinet making factory of my father - a wood carver. Cangiullo a ainsi commenté ce tableau : "C’est la toute première idée des ‘lettres humanisées’, qui m’est venue durant une après-midi dans l’usine de meubles de mon père, sculpteur en bois.
